Doing some research today and came across Dixie Street in Bethnal Green, London.
So I had a look as it’s the same name as my daughter.
I was sad to discover in 1897 Pearce (the policeman) had been giving evidence about the Dixie Street fire. He said Mother and 8 children burnt, husband died same day in infirmary of consumption. All to be buried today. Pearce said it would be a curious sight. Funeral was by public subscription. The Vicar of St Bartholemew's having made an appeal. The family were poor, so the funeral was paid for by donations from the local people.
Everybody turned out for what was a huge spectacle. Dixie Street was a passage with two-storied, four roomed houses on the south side of it only, dark blue on the map in the middle of a very poor quarter.
The House was completely gutted but neighbouring houses untouched. The coffins and mourners went in horse-drawn carriages. The horses and mules were draped in black and decorated with feather plumes. They knew how to do a funeral properly in the East End. The family was named Jarvis God bless such a sad story 😢
