Railway Tavern, Mare street, Hackney

Most of you won’t recognise the first photo.
Well here goes this image captures Mare street E8 in Hackney, you can see St Augustine’s Tower in the background.

Originally named the ‘Eight Bells’🔔 pub and established in 1665 and later had the address of 347 Mare Street.
In 1880 the original building was demolished due to the railway crossing and road junction redevelopment.
The replacement pub ‘Railway Tavern’ was built now numbered 339 Mare Street.

It suffered bomb damage during WW2 and again the pub was rebuilt in 1955.

The pub eventually closed its doors in 2009 and today it is a betting shop called ‘Paddy Power’. The first photo was taken in 1873 showing Eight Bells pub the other photos show the changes through time.🔔🚃🥃🍷
